If you receive a message from GEPF which says “Dear GEPF member, SARS issued a tax directive for your payment. Processing of your benefit payment is in process”, it usually means means that your pension fund payout you are receiving from the GEPF will be subject to tax on the amount and that SARS has already taken the tax off. You will receive the amount after tax.
Once GEPF have calculated the amounts based on GEPF rules, they ask the South African Revenue Service (SARS) for a tax directive. After GEPF receive the directive, they deduct the tax amount, including any other tax debt owed to SARS. The final amount, after tax, is what the member can expect in cash or as a transfer to another approved pension fund.
