The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) is a statutory body established in terms of the Engineering Profession Act (EPA), 46 of 2000. ECSA is the only body in South Africa that is authorised to register engineering professionals and bestow the use of engineering titles such as Pr Eng, Pr Tech Eng, Pr Techni Eng, Pr Cert Eng, on persons who have met the requisite professional registration criteria.



ECSA Registration Requirements

  • Relevant engineering qualification in the applicable professional registration category
  • A minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience
  • Demonstrate problem-solving competence (including design or developing solutions) and for managing engineering activities (including implementing or constructing solutions)
  • Training and experience reports which include a summary of work experience during the training and experience period in chronological order
  • Engineering report which includes a detailed narrative of how you have fulfilled the requirements
  • Evidence of continued professional development (e.g. courses attended, additional qualifications obtained, formal training etc).  

ECSA Registration Process

To Apply for Registration as a professional engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa, the applicant must go to the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) office in South Africa.

  1. The application form must be obtained from the authorities at the SACLAP office, or else it can also be downloaded from the official website linked here. Application Form Link
  2. Make sure that you have all the documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  3. The application form must be filled with all the necessary details, and along with the required documents, it must be submitted to the officials at the ECSA office.
  4. The officials will verify the application for the eligibility requirements of the registration process.
  5. The verification process for registration will be considered by the officials only when the referee reports are received by the council members in a reasonable timeframe given by the department.
  6. After verification, if all the details are legitimate then the Registration as a Professional Engineer will be approved by the ECSA officials.
  7. The prescribed registration fee must be paid by the applicant, and the copy of the payment receipt must be attached along with the application form.
  8. After the approval, the applicant will be issued with the registration certificate.

  10. The registration application approval will be intimated to the applicant within 4 months from the date of submitting the application. (No telephonic information regarding the progress of any application will be given)
